Play It Again or the Girl Dies
You lot know the words, but do yous know the story behind them? In a new volume, Nashville Songwriter, music biographer Jake Brown interviews elite country songwriters to get "the true stories backside country music's biggest and most indelible hits," he says. "What followed has been i of the about thrilling writing adventures of my life, and a bible of sorts for hopefully multiple generations of land music fans wanting to know more about where the soundtrack of their lives came from."
We're excerpting a serial of passages from the book, continuing with the story behind Luke Bryan's hit, "Play It Again," this summer's big land hitting. Co-writers Dallas DavidsonandAshley Gorley both explain how the smash vocal came together, below.
Dallas Davidson:
"I'm pretty tapped into Luke's encephalon, existence that we're from the same home boondocks and best friends, so I'thou able to channel that into my writing for him.
We started 'Play It Again' just like Ashley and I always practise, where we just outset jamming, he played the piano and I played the guitar, and we simply beginning mumbling stuff and then words start coming out, 'She was sitting all alone on a tailgate, tan legs swinging by a Georgia plate…'

That song was written kind of backwards, and I don't think we said the title first and then wrote to it. We wrote it andthen the title popped out, so we started with the verse and then worked our style to writing a chorus. And then when we got to 'Oh my God, this is my song,' that kind of became a hook: 'This is my song.' I think we were going to call information technology, 'This is my vocal,' but then Ashley started singing, 'Play it again, play it over again, play information technology again,' and that became the championship.
That's what really collection that song because that's how people talk: 'She was like, Oh my God.' That's how this generation speaks. I gauge it's my generation too, but one time we hit 'Oh my God, this is my song,' we knew nosotros were on to something for sure on that.
Ashley Gorley:
"I was just kind of playing the keyboards on this ane, messing around, and we were writing with the idea that the song we were writing was going to be somebody's favorite vocal—some style to kind of put that. It was a really, actually loose idea, about when a girl says, 'This is my song, this is my song!'
And we both kind of landed on that, "Oh my God, this is my song" thing with the melody both at the aforementioned time, and it took off from there chorus-wise. We both kind of said it at the aforementioned time, and in one case we had the chorus going, we spit out 'play information technology again' at the end of it. It was kind of a footling extra bonus at the terminate that wound up beingness what everybody called information technology. 'Play Information technology Once again' was 2-and-a-half years old earlier information technology became a No. ane. [Bryan] had it on hold for a while, and it'southward been only keen to see that become all the way through."
